About Dilworth

Dilworth was the first suburb of downtown Charlotte and is one of its most historic and premier neighborhoods. It has one of the finest collections of Victorian residences as well as the city’s earliest experiments with the now popular Colonial Revival style.

The neighborhood was Charlotte's first streetcar suburb and was established by Edward Dilworth Latta in the 1890s on 250 acres southwest of the original city limits.  Planned largely with a grid pattern similar to the city's original four wards, it was initially designated the Eighth Ward. The streets of Dilworth feature stately, mature oak trees, sidewalks, and houses with front porches. The homes are primarily bungalows – with the occasional Queen Anne – and some larger, two-story Colonial Revival homes lining Dilworth Road East and West. East Boulevard serves as the main thoroughfare through the neighborhood, and divides the residential. East Boulevard is lined with restaurants, offices and shops, many located in renovated homes. Charlotte’s largest hospital, Carolinas Medical Center, is in Dilworth. This 861-bed teaching hospital is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center.

Colorful, historic Dilworth with its park, boulevards, elegant mansions and sparkling bungalows is Charlotte’s earliest suburban development.
Dilworth had not only fine residences, but also a race track, ball park, pavilion, lake and an industrial complex which included textile mills and a foundry.

The National Register neighborhood retains its residential charm while embracing lively adaptive reuse for commerce, galleries, restaurants and entertainment.
