About Davidson
Davidson, located 30 miles north of Charlotte, is a town in Iredell and Mecklenburg counties. The population was 7,139 at the 2000 census. It is home to Davidson College.
Davidson is unique in that it is very different both geographically and culturally from the rest of Mecklenburg County. Lying along the eastern shore of Lake Norman, the town is centered around the southern college from which it takes its name.
The town was founded in 1837 with the establishment of the Presbyterian Davidson College, named for Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a local Revolutionary War hero in Mecklenburg County. The land for Davidson College came from Davidson's estate, a large portion of which was donated by his son.
This small, southern college town has engaged and active citizens who care deeply about their community and are dedicated to providing and maintaining a slendid quality of life. Maintaining the town’s unique qualities and superior services for every resident is a key core value to town government. Citizens are the heart of the town where it is found to be a safe place to live, work and raise a family.
It is mix of people in all income levels and are treated equally, with courtesy and respect.
Davidson’s traditional character is that of a small town, with its historic patterns of village-centered growth, with connections to neighborhoods, preservation of rural areas and provisions of public spaces. Its economical health is essential to remaining a sustainable community while providing citizens a healthy environment to protect watersheds, trees and air quality. 18 parks including greenways dot the landscape.
Davidson is built for pedestrians and bike riders, not for the car. No drive thrus are allowed here. We believe in connectivity and walkable streets. Our main street has shops, wide sidewalks, a community library and flowers everywhere. Our town green is used for pick up football games, coffee sessions, play dates, festivals, croquet matches and outdoor concerts.
We are passionate about diversity in that we require that 12.5% of all new development is affordable to encourage all types of homes and all types of citizens.
